
The Gillespie High School girls cross country team are the 2021 South Central Conference Champions. The girls performed exceptionally Saturday at a well-ran meet hosted by South Western High School.
Gillespie barely edged out a tough Litchfield squad by four points. Scores were Gillespie 40, Litchfield 44, Staunton 58, Southwestern 91, Carlinville 93.
The girls’ places and times are as follows:
- Brynn Baker 3rd, 21:19
- Erika Gill 4th 21:40
- Katie Polo 9th, 23:11
- Mia Brawner 11th, 24:11
- Lily Brown 13th 25:05.
The first four girls that placed for the Miners were also recognized individually as All-Conference runners out of a field of eleven recipients. The last time the girls won the Cross Country Conference title was in 2001.
In the boys meet, Carlinville took the gold just edging out Litchfield on a tiebreaker. Gillespie’s three runners performed well. Their place and times are as follows: Leo Page, 17th 19:33, Levi Hatlee, 27th, 21:39, Luke Hatlee, 31st, 22:27.
Next Saturday both teams will run in the Regional meet in Bellville that will host approximately 20 schools.
