The Gillespie High School girls are playing their best softball of the season despite starting with an 0-5 start. After Monday night’s victory in Raymond, the softball team extended their winning streak to nine games over 14 days with only three games remaining in the team’s regular season schedule.
Head coach Michelle Smith is ecstatic about her team’s performance and says she is glad the team is finally playing to the capability she was expecting. “I’m glad they are proving what the coaching staff knew they had,” Smith wrote after last week’s victory over East Alton-Wood River. “Super proud of these girls.”
Gillespie’s last loss was back on April 20 where they lost a conference matchup against Staunton 2-3. Since then, the Miners posted four conference victories over Litchfield, Metro East Lutheran, Carlinville and Greenville to put their SCC record at 6-1. The team also ousted Roxana, Carlinville, East Alton, Vandalia and Raymond in their winning streak reign.
Super proud of these girls.
The Miners have outscored their opponents 40 to 1 in their last three games and 83 to 7 during their 9-game winning streak. It has been a combined effort from Gillespie’s batter’s box, but freshman Mackenzie Kasarda has recorded five RBI’s in the last three games and Beth Fields has recorded five hits in her last three outings.
Sophomore Addison Bryant continues to throw heat for Gillespie striking out 27 batters in her last three games in 17 innings pitched. Bryant only surrendered one hit in last night’s 15-0 victory over Raymond-Lincolnwood where she faced just 16 batters in her five innings of work.
Rylee Sarti carried the team last night after hitting 3-for-4 with a double and four runs batted in. Ally Clay was a threat on the base paths as well with three hits, two stolen bases, two RBIs and three runs scored. Bryant, Bette Hammann and Abby Munos also posted a hit last night.
Gillespie is 13-7 overall this season with Piasa, Staunton and Hillsboro, all of which are home games, remaining on the regular season schedule before regionals in Carlinville. Gillespie is pooled with Carlinville, Hillsboro, Litchfield and North Mac in the Carlinville Regional this season. Seeds for the regional are expected to be announced later this afternoon.
