Shelby Jarman led the Miners with 23 points.
The Lady Miners entered the 31st annual Carlinville Holiday Tournament with a record of 4-8. Their first match-up in the tournament was the local rival, Carlinville. After losing to them earlier in the season 31-41, the Miners were out for glory this time around after catching glimpse of the 4 foot tall first place tournament trophy.
Carlinville entered the bout with the home court advantage on their side Monday night as their record stood at an even 6-6. Carlinville took the first strike in the game and broke away with an early 2 point lead, but the table would soon turn for the rest of the game. The Miners, led by junior Shelby Jarman, went on a 6-0 run to gain control of the lead as 3 minutes still remained in the first quarter. Jarman went on to score 8 of the Miners 13 points in the quarter and give the ladies a 6 point lead after one quarter of play.
The second quarter was the opposite for the Miners as the Cavaliers scored 13 points and the Miners only scored 7 to knot the game at 20 at halftime. The 10 minute halftime proved to be the momentum changer for the Miners as they went on a 4-0 run early in the third quarter. The ladies kept the full court press in order and outscored the Cavies in the third quarter by a half dozen and played tough defense in the fourth quarter to close the game out 43-39 to grab their first victory in the tournament.
The Miners trailed early in the first quarter, but the deficit was soon trimmed and the ladies never trailed again for the rest of the game. Shelby Jarman carried the Miners throughout the game as she scored a career high 23 points, but one person does not make a team as the Miners relied on all five players to apply the full court pressure defense. The full court defense caught the Cavaliers off guard as the two guards recorded 6 turnovers in just the first quarter while Loni Nicole Manalia tallied a hand full of steals.
Towards the end of the first quarter, the Cavies started to pass around the full court defense and start to put the ball in the basket. Led by Jordan Ballinger, the Cavaliers scored 7 points in the first quarter while three of them came from free throws. Even after shooting 75% from the free throw line, Carlinville still trailed by 6 points after the first quarter: 13-7.
Opening the second quarter with possession of the ball, the Cavaliers scored early and scored often after being outscored in the first quarter. The Miner defense started to break down as perseverance was taking a toll on a few of the ladies. Again in the second quarter, the Cavies got near half of their points from the free throw line as the Miners put them in bonus with five minutes left in the first half.
Cassidy Downs was the leading scorer for Carlinville as she scored 4 of her 9 points in the second quarter. As the Miners rotated the bench in the second quarter, four different players managed to put points on the board as Ellen Gray recorded a couple assists to go along with her field goal. Manalia and Jarman each put forth an additional 2 points after the pair scored all of the points in the first quarter. Although, the seven points did not amount to Carlinville’s 13 as the game was now tied at halftime: 20-20.
With the possession arrow facing towards the Miner side of the court, the ladies had the momentum on their side already. The first possession accounted for two points after Shelby Jarman knocked down a field goal. The Miners got some additional help on offense from Alexis Burns and Tyler Ross as both of them put forth a field goal to accompany Jarman’s 8 points in the quarter.
The Miners kept with the full court pressure defense in the third quarter and, much like the first quarter, stole the ball 3 more times and caused 4 turnovers. Carlinville did manage to score 6 points in the quarter with two being free throws. Just two field goals did not compare to the Miners’ four field goals and four free throws as Jarman went a perfect 4 for 4 from the charity line. After outscoring the Cavies by six, the Miners were in control of the game again after the third quarter: 32-26.
Ellen Gray attempts to reject a shot on the defensive end.
Just 8 minutes stood in between win number five for the Miners. It was a roller coaster in the fourth quarter as the game was tied nearly all of the eight minutes after Carlinville went on a 4-0 run early in the fourth quarter to knot the game. From there, it was back and forth while each shot or each foul could have been the contributing factor for a loss.
As the clock continued to roll down, both teams were shooting in the bonus as just a couple minutes remained on the game clock. Haylie Kirkwood grabbed her fourth foul early in fourth quarter, so the Lady Miners were without their star center for much of the final quarter of play before she was brought back in the game with about 1 minute left. Jarman continued to carry the Miners from the offensive end as all of her 5 points came from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Loni Nicole Manalia and Haylie Kirkwood carried the team on the defensive end as Manalia recorded 3 steals in the fourth quarter and Kirkwood tallied 2 defensive rebounds. The Cavaliers were led by Stayton as she scored 6 of their 13 points in the quarter while she also tied the game up at 39 with 30 seconds left in the game. 30 seconds seemed like 10 minutes, but the Miners were able to score four points in those final seconds while holding the Cavies on the defensive end to capture their first victory in the tournament: 43-39.
After being outscored two quarters and outscoring them on the two other quarters, the Miners walked out of the gym with their heads held high as the feeling of beating Carlinville on their home court is “priceless.” The Miners shot a season high 74% free throw percentage, but the ladies still struggled controlling the ball as 24 tally marks filled the turnover box in the scorebook.
Shelby Jarman led the Miners Monday night as she scored 23 points. Loni Nicole Manalia followed with 8 points while both Alexis Burns and Ellen Gray put forth 4 points each. Tyler Ross added an additional 2 points while Kayli Morris and Becca Ely knocked one free throw for 1 point a piece.
Loni Nicole Manalia led the team with 5 steals and 3 offensive rebounds while Ellen Gray was the leader with 3 assists. Shelby Jarman and Haylie Kirkwood destroyed the boards on the defensive end as they tallied 6 and 4 defensive rebounds respectively.
The Miners returned to the floor Tuesday afternoon as they faced off against Litchfield. The Miners took a tough loss as the Panthers defeated them 53-27. The Miners now stand 5-9 on the season while their next game in the tournament will be played on Thursday at noon.
