Mike Mathis announcing his candidacy in Gillespie Thursday afternoon.

Joined by large crowds of republicans, democrats and independent voters, Macoupin County Circuit Clerk Mike Mathis announced his candidacy for the 95th Representative District on Thursday during a districtwide tour with stops in the towns of Gillespie, Hillsboro, Pana, Taylorville and Worden, which covered all four counties within the district.

“Local residents need an advocate in Springfield who will do more than sit on their hands and refuse to take a stand on issues that impact our families,” Mathis said. “We need someone who will actually do their job, work for middle-class families and taxpayers, fight for a good standard of living that families deserve, and protect vital programs and services that we rely on. I will put our middle-class families’ needs above the dangerous agendas of politicians.”

A U.S. Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War, former small-business owner and job counselor, Mathis also worked in a local coal mine and served as alderman and mayor of Gillespie. As Macoupin County Circuit Clerk, Mathis has made the office more transparent and more efficient by doing more work with fewer employees.

“I believe in fiscal responsibility, and in the circuit clerk’s office we’ve had to do more with less while maintaining the quality service we provide to taxpayers,” Mathis said. “I know that government needs to make spending cuts, but those cuts cannot be made at the expense of middle-class families who expect good schools, in-home medical care for elderly residents, and services for victims of child abuse and children with autism and disabilities. I’ve worked extensively with municipal and county budgets to make sure government lives within its means while continuing to provide basic services without going to the extreme of shutting down government, and that’s what the state needs right now.”

Mathis highlighted his support of legislation, opposed by current state Rep. Avery Bourne, which increased funding for local schools. He also voiced his support for a statewide property tax freeze, which Bourne has failed to support more than a dozen times this year alone.  Mathis also noted that unlike Bourne, he would take a stand on issues by voting on bills coming before the House of Representatives.  Bourne has voted present or refused to vote on legislation 66 times during her first few months in office.

Mathis said he supports a balanced approach to addressing the state’s budget deficit that includes reductions in state spending while protecting basic and critical services that middle-class families, children, elderly residents, and persons with disabilities depend on from dangerous cuts. As a former small-businessman and a job counselor, he will work together with local businesses to help spur job creation and retention in the area.

Mathis traveled across the district on Thursday making stops in each of the four counties to announce his candidacy for State Representative. A number of local republican, democratic and independent residents and supporters joined Mathis at his announcement and expressed their support.

“I am a republican and I support Mike Mathis because he has always been a fair public servant who understands the people he serves, and he doesn’t rest until he does all he can for them,” said Bunker Hill alderman and small business owner Glenn Bruckert. “Political party makes no difference as long as you’re fighting for the people you represent, especially when the candidate is someone with the integrity and real-world experience like the rest of us. Mike Mathis is that candidate.”

Mathis is a member of the United Mine Workers of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, AMVETS, Knights of Columbus, Elks and the National Rifle Association.

“Mike has worked his entire life to provide for his family and give back to his community” said Florence Dane from Gillespie. “He’s a veteran, a former small-businessman, blue-collar worker, husband and father who understands the tough times that people in our area have gone through because he’s been through them himself. The current state representative doesn’t seem to get that, especially when you look at how she’s refused to vote to help local residents with property tax relief, refused to protect their wages and refused to provide essential services that children and seniors count on.”

“I’ve spent my life dedicated to service. It’s just something I feel is the right thing to do. I’ve had the great fortune of serving our communities as a public servant and my country as a soldier in the U.S. Army, and now I’m committed to serving my state as a representative for the people of the 95th District,” Mathis said.

Mathis resides in Gillespie with his wife, Janice. They have one daughter and two grandsons. The 95th House District includes all or parts of Christian, Macoupin, Madison and Montgomery counties.
