Head coach Michelle Smith welcomes pitcher Addison Bryant to the dugout with a congratulatory five.
Searching for their first sectional softball title since 1995, the Gillespie Miners’ softball team took the field behind the new Ben-Gil Elementary School in Gillespie last Saturday against Dupo.
But it wasn’t meant to be.
The record setting season came to an end when Dupo advanced a runner from second base to home in the bottom of the seventh inning to break the tie and win the sectional 2-1.
The first batter for Dupo in the bottom of the seventh inning reached first base on an error. She was sacrificed to second base before the third batter of the inning flied to right field where the ball dropped between Ally Clay in right field and Rylee Jarman rushing from second base. Dupo’s Donald then antagonized a throw by attempting to advance to second base while the winning run advanced to home.
Gillespie’s only run of the game came in the top of the second inning when Rylee Sarti crossed home on a single by Sydney Henrichs. Sarti and Henrichs along with Jarman and Abby Munos were the only four Gillespie players to record a hit Saturday against Dupo.
The Miners ended the season 31-4 setting a new overall best record for Gillespie High School while adding another regional championship trophy to the program’s award case.
“I want to personally thank everyone for such a wonderful showing at both the regional and the sectional,” head coach Michelle Smith commented on The BenGil Post’s photo article from Saturday. “It didn’t end the way we wanted, but it was a great run and a privilege to be around such a great group of girls.”
Assisting Smith with the team are Joe Kelly and Jim Matesa.
