The Gillespie High School softball team defeated the Waterloo Bulldogs with a walk-off single from Sadie Sholtis in the bottom of the seventh on Saturday, April 13.
Lauren Bertagnolli put Gillespie on the board during the first inning on a fielder’s choice, scoring one run.
Emma Gipson went the distance and earned the win, striking out 10 batters, giving up four runs on nine hits. Gipson walked just two batters in the game. Mia Miller took the loss in the circle for Waterloo.
Gillespie tallied a total of eight hits in the victory. Ava Parish went 2 for 4 in the leadoff spot, scoring one run. Sadie Sholtis was surehanded at the plate, going 2 for 3 with one run scored, one RBI, and a walk. Bertagnolli, Addi Cox, Delaney Taylor, and Gipson all placed one in the hit column in the victory.
Following their win against Waterloo, Gillespie took a devastating 13-to-3 loss against the Freeburg Midgets. Unfortunately, Gillespie couldn’t match the bats of Freeburg.
Paxton Reid took the loss in the circle for Gillespie, putting in three and one-third innings of work. Reid gave up five runs on six hits, striking out one batter in their efforts. Aubrey Waeltz earned the win for Freeburg, giving up only three runs on six hits over five innings of work.
Hits were hard to come by for Gillespie, with just a handful of players finding their way into the hit column. Parish, Bertagnolli, Gipson, Macie Wright, Cox, and Amari Vickery had one hit each. Wright drove in two runs, and Vickery drove in one.
Sadie Sholtis had a good eye at the plate, drawing two walks and scoring one run. Schuckenbrock also had a walk in their efforts.
