The Gillespie High School softball team defeated the Waterloo Bulldogs with a walk-off single from Sadie Sholtis in the bottom of the seventh on Saturday, April 13. 

Lauren Bertagnolli put Gillespie on the board during the first inning on a fielder’s choice, scoring one run.

Emma Gipson went the distance and earned the win, striking out 10 batters, giving up four runs on nine hits. Gipson walked just two batters in the game. Mia Miller took the loss in the circle for Waterloo. 

Gillespie tallied a total of eight hits in the victory. Ava Parish went 2 for 4 in the leadoff spot, scoring one run. Sadie Sholtis was surehanded at the plate, going 2 for 3 with one run scored, one RBI, and a walk. Bertagnolli, Addi Cox, Delaney Taylor, and Gipson all placed one in the hit column in the victory. 

Following their win against Waterloo, Gillespie took a devastating 13-to-3 loss against the Freeburg Midgets. Unfortunately, Gillespie couldn’t match the bats of Freeburg. 

Paxton Reid took the loss in the circle for Gillespie, putting in three and one-third innings of work. Reid gave up five runs on six hits, striking out one batter in their efforts. Aubrey Waeltz earned the win for Freeburg, giving up only three runs on six hits over five innings of work. 

Hits were hard to come by for Gillespie, with just a handful of players finding their way into the hit column. Parish, Bertagnolli, Gipson, Macie Wright, Cox, and Amari Vickery had one hit each. Wright drove in two runs, and Vickery drove in one. 

Sadie Sholtis had a good eye at the plate, drawing two walks and scoring one run. Schuckenbrock also had a walk in their efforts.

The Gillespie Miners baseball team earned a 6-4 victory against the Vandalia Vandals on Tuesday, April 9. 

Luke Schuckenbrock collected the win for the Miners on the mound. Schuckenbrock surrendered four runs on 10 hits, striking out  three and walking two. Relief pitcher Tristen Wargo stepped on the mound for the Gillespie Miners and recorded the save. Andrew Casey holds the loss for the Vandalia Vandals. 

Sean Haywood had a hot bat in the nine hole, going 2 for 3 at the plate. Jesse Berry had a solid performance, going 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs. Tristen Wargo, Schuckenbrock, Jack Kaylor, and Collin Griffith all had a hit in the win. Jaydon Baker and Bryce Hohnsbehn also had an RBI. 

Griffith showed his speed on the base path, stealing two bases throughout the game. Kaylor, Wargo, and Owen Schweppe also had a stolen base. 

Gillespie earned a 15-0 shutout win against the Carlinville Cavaliers on Tuesday, April 11. Sean Haywood recorded the win for the Miners on the Mound. Haywood allowed no runs on two hits, walking one and striking out three. Bryce Widner took the loss on the books for Carlinville. 

Hits were not hard to come by this game for the Miners, as they produced 11 hits off of Carlinville’s pitching staff. Hohnsbehn was a force at the plate, going 2 for 2 with 1 hit, 1 RBI, and 1 walk. Wargo went 2 for 3 at the plate, collecting 1 RBI and scoring 2 runs. 

Andrew Sellers, Luke Schuckenbrock, Berry, Buhs, Griffith, Haywood, and Lancaster all recorded a hit in the win. 

To finish off the week, the Miners took home another win against the Staunton Bulldogs, 14-4.

Wargo earned the win on the rubber for Gillespie, allowing three runs on four hits and collecting seven strikeouts. Brady Gillen took the loss for Staunton, giving up seven runs on six hits. 

Wargo was a force both on the mound and in the batter’s box. He went 3 for 3 at the plate with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored, and a walk. Baker had a stellar offensive performance, going 3 or 3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Hohnsbehn and Berry each had a pair of hits on the night. Schuckenbrock, Kaylor, and Griffith put a 1 in the hit column. 

The Miners had a total of 13 hits and 4 walks throughout the game.

Gillespie High School softball stepped on the field against the Centralia Annies on Saturday, April 6, taking home a 12 to 0 win.

Emma Gipson picked up the win in the circle, striking out 11 batters and allowing only one hit through five innings of work. Hits were not hard to come by for Gillespie, with a total of 11 hits in the game.

Ava Parish was hot in the leadoff spot, going 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Macie Wright went 2 for 3 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Sadie Sholtis also had a great showing, going 2 for 4, with 3 RBIs and one run plated. Macie Wright went 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI in the game. Lauren Bertagnolli, Addi Cox, Laci Schuckenbrock, and Delaney Taylor all had a hit throughout the game. Jocelyn Hossler took the loss for Centralia, allowing five runs on five hits.

Gipson had another dominant showing in the circle on Monday, April 8, against the Collinsville Kahoks. Gillespie took the 3-1 win behind Gipson, who allowed only three hits with one run, striking out 15 batters in the game.

Parish and Bertagnolli were a commanding duo at the plate, collecting two hits each in the victory. Gipson, Wright, and Taylor each had a one in the hit column. Wright collected an RBI and a walk in the game. Ali Vieluf took the loss in the circle for Collinsville.

Gillespie faced off against Vandalia on Tuesday, April 9, taking a 17-to-1 win. Gipson put in four innings of work for the win as the starting pitcher, giving up two hits, one run and striking out eight.

Paxton Reid had a stellar night at the plate, going 3 for 3 with 5 RBIs and one run scored. Parish, Wright, Schuckenbrock, Taylor, and Cox all had a multi-hit game in their winning efforts. Wright homered to center field. Gipson put a 1 in the hit column on the night with a triple. M. McCall took the loss in the circle for Vandalia, giving up 17 runs on 14 hits.

Gillespie ended their week with a 20-to-4 win against the Dupo Tigers. Amari Vickery had a hot night at the plate, going 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Schuckenbrock went 2 for 4 in the game with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs. Reid also had a home run and five RBIs in the victory.

Parish, Cox, and Ava Rakers all put up multiple hits throughout the game. Sholtis, Taylor, and Ava Segerra each had a one in the hit column. Kaitlynn Townsend took the loss for Dupo, allowing 20 runs on 16 hits.

Gillespie will take the field against Staunton this Friday.
