The Gillespie High School Chapter of the National Honor Society welcomed 16 inductees during a ceremony held last Thursday at Gillespie High School. Superintendent Joe Tieman congratulated the new members on their accomplishments and being accepted into the National Honor Society.
The 16 new members join six current members. Students are selected on the basis of their scholarship, service, leadership and character. The ceremony was led by President Amanda Schmidt with additional support from other senior members, Hannah Doty (vice president), Ally Bires (secretary), Jacob Martin (treasurer), Addison Bryant and Tate Wargo.
Adam Tallman, insurance agent for Farmers Insurance in Gillespie and volunteer baseball coach, provided remarks to the new and current members along with their guests during the evening ceremony. Tallman is a 2003 graduate of Gillespie High School and former member of the Gillespie Chapter of National Honor Society.
After congratulating the students on the accomplishment, Tallman challenged students to use their intelligence and translate it to real world scenarios saying “everyone knows you’re book smart”. He told students to study life, which narrowed into paying bills, cooking, taking care of yourself, problem solving and living with a roommate.
“You have to make life work,” Tallman explained after giving an example of meeting his first college roommate and recalling he had to make the living situation work or college was going to be miserable. But most importantly, he said, you have to deal with failure.
He told the students and audience that failure is evitable and nothing is wrong with asking for help. Tallman encouraged students to build a large network circle and prepared students by telling them every conversation is a job interview.
“Be friendly, be smart, carry on an intelligent conversation with them,” Tallman read from his prepared speech. “You are to embody confidence in everything you do.”
Tallman provided laughter to the audience in the conclusion of his remarks by sharing words from his father when he went off on his own: 1) Your talent is God’s gift to you, what you do with it is your gift back to God, 2) Keep your nose clean – don’t get in trouble, 3) Don’t ruin my last name and lastly, 4) If you are at a party and you’re the smartest person there, you’re at the wrong party.
