School began this week at CUSD #7

Students flashed us "thumbs up" as they walked into the new Ben-Gil Elementary School.

Students flashed us “thumbs up” as they walked into the new Ben-Gil Elementary School.

Monday marked the first day of school for students in school district #7. Elementary students started their school year off in a brand new start-of-the-art elementary school while middle school and high school students returned with new administration in charge. Buses are again part of the morning and afternoon traffic as they route to pick up and drop off students for school.

In the elementary school, students were welcomed to a school that seemed to be out of their dreams. The school, which will occupy nearly 660 children during the day, is nearly complete and the children love their home for during the day. Last minute touches are still being made and the playground equipment is 90% installed.

“The response has been nearly overwhelming,” Principal Angela Turcol said of the new building. “Not only the students loved the building, but the parents love it too.” Turcol had organized a traffic route for students being dropped off and picked up from the new Ben-Gil Elementary School. Traffic flows down Route 16 and then parents/guardians turn onto Ben-Gil Elementary Drive which is the first left turn following the United Methodist Church.

No vehicles can enter the elementary campus from Kelly Street. Kelly Street is restricted for buses and Pre-Kindergarten only. “Drop off went really smooth and we have a couple more things to work out with pickup,” Turcol said. “Until we actually saw how people responded, we can readjust everything.” Overall, she said the first days of school went very well.

Tom Hyde reported the elementary campus has been sodded and the photo voltaic system has been installed on the roof and conduit is run back to the electrical room. “The PV system should be operating in 2 weeks,” Hyde explained.

In the middle school and high school, students were welcomed with a new administration staff. High school principal Dennis Tiburzi retired in the midst of summer break after being with the school district for 16 years. The school board appointed middle school principal Lori Emmons to a secondary school administrator overlooking the high school and middle school. Instead of appointing a middle school principal, the board hired 8th grade science teacher Jill Rosentreter as an assistant to Emmons.

Emmons will focus mostly all of her time on the high school while Rosentreter we oversee operations in the middle school. Mike Bertagnolli still remains as the athletic director for both buildings. Emmons said both buildings got off to a great start this week. “A big thanks goes out to the students for doing everything they were supposed to,” Emmons explained. “I thank the teachers, the maintenance crew, and Mark Carpani and his assistant, Steve Compton, for getting everything ready. They all were there when we need them.”

In addition to the 660 students in the elementary building, CUSD #7 had approximately 282 students enroll in Gillespie Middle School and nearly 381 students enroll in Gillespie High School amounting to over 1,300 students on the district 7 campus every day. “We still have students transferring, so we should grow over the next month,” Emmons added.

The middle school now occupies the south end of the school since elementary classrooms have all been cleared out and moved to the new building. In addition to the extra classrooms, the middle school now gets to eat in the cafeteria again. In the past years, the middle school has been served lunch in the middle school gym due to the elementary school eating lunch at the same time.

Emmons went on to stress parents were shown how to look up grades online during orientation. The internet based Information Now program is new the district 7 campus, but parents have been slowly getting more familiar with the website as time goes on. Emmons said Ms. Steph Bray demonstrated how to use the program to parents in hopes more families will get on the site to monitor their students’ performance.
