The Miners started their rally too late today in their loss to Edwardsville High School. The Miners had just 2 hits in the first 5 innings. The 6th inning they tried to turn it around but couldn’t muster enough hits to overcome the Tigers. Senior Denae Richardson smashed a homerun, but it wasn’t enough as area powerhouse beat the Miners 8-3.
Laura Halpin, junior, pitched the entire game for the Miners. Halpin sat down 3 batters while giving up 5 hits and 8 walks. She ended with 6 earned runs and 2 unearned runs. The defense had their highlights tonight, but also combined for another 4 errors. Freshman, Molly Gray started left field tonight and made a spectacular diving catch for the Miners in the top of the 5th inning which potentially could of saved two extra runs. Payton Anderson, star shortstop, also helped Halpin out tonight with a 6-3 unassisted double play in the top of the 6th inning which cleared the bases. Halpin went on to get the next batter to ground out.
Even though the Miners attempted to close the gap in the 6th, they only ended up with 5 hits. Denae Richardson carried the team with 3 RBIs and a homerun. Abbie Cline hit a double while Payton Anderson, Loni Nicole Manalia, and Molly Gray each contributed a single for the team.
Even though the Miners are on a two game losing streak, all is not lost. Metro East and Edwardsville are two of the top teams in the area. Facing two quality opponents this early in the season surely will pay dividends for a young Miners team late in the season. As the defense improves, they should be a force to deal with in the Prairie State conference and make a run in the playoffs.
